Ars Trobar Italica
The Troubadour Legacy in Medieval Italy
This programme explores the vibrant afterlife of Occitan troubadour poetry in medieval Italy, tracing how the art of the trobar – refined, intricate, and often daring – resonated across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Featuring the voices of legendary troubadours such as Bertran de Born, with his fiery political verse; Folquet de Marselha, whose lyrical path led from song to sainthood; and Arnaut Daniels, master of poetic subtlety and praised by Dante himself, Ars Trobar Italica revives the soundscape of a shared poetic tradition.
Alongside these Occitan masterpieces, the programme also includes early Italian compositions – madrigals and ballate from sources such as the Codex Rossi – that bear witness to the enduring influence of troubadour poetics on Italy’s emerging vernacular song.
